"but O, to no end": holy sonnet 4
i labored to admit you. but i admit nothing.
yet you burgled me, sleek and soft, passing at night your body in parts past the threshold of my secret dwelling place. what viceroy in me could prove unweak and true in defense against armor of white lace and heavy swords of breath?
you burgled me by fraud: i entered you, i thought. when in point of fact you entered me. enthralled me. ravished me as i ravished you.
love was not the felony you intended therein. love is no felony.
you left faith in my ransacked place. faith is felony: i would be "loved fain," but am betrothed.
unto your enemy.
